Alexis Berdine has done some excellent reporting on Addicted Michigan for WWMT Channel 3 News. And recently, she talked to Sanford Founder, Rae Green, about the COVID-19 impact on addiction treatment. Also prompting this interview, was the increase in requests for help with substance use disorders (SUDs) recently. Green says that job loss, uncertainty, financial stress, and isolation can make it more likely for a person in recovery to relapse. Social distancing precautions in response to the pandemic have also been responsible for the surge in people looking for first-time addiction help.


COVID-19 Impact on Addiction Treatment

Support groups can no longer meet in person, so addiction treatment centers have begun to use telehealth technology to substitute for in-person meetings. Sanford Addiction Treatment Centers is operational and conducting Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Outpatient Therapy, and support groups virtually. Green said Sanford’s virtual doors have opened, and the “rooms” have been full.


I am so reassured by the fact people are still reaching out for virtual help. Particularly those in early recovery who can be very vulnerable right now …
