Opinion Rae Green: Funding for Opioid Crisis Not Enough

opioid bottles opinion on funding

Recent headlines, including  an article in Crain’s Detroit Business reported that Michigan will receive about $35 million in new federal funding this year through the State Opioid Response Grant. Funding is being provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to “track opioid deaths and to support prevention, treatment and recovery programs”. Michigan was awarded  $11.1 million in August to boost efforts at community health and other treatment centers.

Sanford Addiction Treatment Centers

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sanford Addiction Treatment Centers is a leader and innovative provider of integrated treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. At Sanford, we provide our clients with evidence-based clinical and medical services, in both outpatient and residential settings, while identifying the unique needs of each person we treat. Our person-centered approach allows us to craft a specialized treatment plan that addresses all aspects of a recovering person’s life, with particular emphasis on family involvement.

As a privately held company, Sanford will not benefit from the State Opioid Response Grant. But the disease of addiction and the opioid crisis affects all aspects of society and all members of an addicted person’s family. We believe in working together to develop and support preventative measures, including more comprehensive education in our schools and workplaces, for prevention is the key to solving this crisis.
